Day 10 - June 10, 2014

This is part of the lower portion of the Pacific Coast Highway, as
we begin to make our journey north, after departing San Diego
this morning.

This is a photo of the coastline along the Pacific Coast
Highway north of Los Angeles.

We made a stop at one of the beach parks along the highway.

The scenery was beautiful.

But, not all of the coast highway runs along the ocean.  Just north of Santa
Barbara the highway turns inward, and offers some
spectacular views of the countryside.

Day Ten.  Overnight in Lompoc, California.  All is well.

Our time in San Diego was great, but after two nights there we were ready to move on.  This morning we had planned to leave San Diego at 9:00 to allow the worst of the traffic to pass, but we were up early, had our bags loaded and on the bike, had breakfast, and were ready to go at 8:00, so off we went.

At times the traffic was heavy, and at other times it was very heavy.  But, it continued to move, most of the time.  We experienced slow traffic at many locations getting though San Diego, traveling to Los Angeles, and then getting though Los Angeles.  Typical.  And expected.

Once we reached Ventura the traffic thinned to heavy, and moved at near posted speed limits much of the time.  The beauty of the countryside and the highway running along the ocean was nothing short of spectacular.  I am including four of the photos I made with this post.  I made well over 50 shots today.

We were able to spend some time with some fellow travelers along the way.  Many were bemoaning the lack of rain in the area, but it was hard for me to tell what that really means from looking at the countryside.  Everything looks brown and dry, but as I recall from many trips to this part of California in years past, and my recollection is that it always looks this way.  I get it.  I understand that the measured numbers say there is less rain.  I just don't understand how this appears to be near the top of the list of things on most of the people with whom we spoke.  Everyone appeared to be going about their lives normally.  But, apparently concerned about the lack of rain.

Our ride was great, all of the way, in spite of the traffic.  It was most comfortable riding.  No rain.  (I hate to bring that up.)  And the temperature varied from 63 degrees as a low, and 73 degrees as a high.  The forecast overnight low in Lompoc tonight is 55 degrees.

We are again staying in a motel.  Our one quote for a camping spot was $45.00.  The base rate for the motel is approximately $20.00 more.  The motel where we are staying is relatively new, and is undergoing a renovation of the rooms.  We got one of the newly renovated rooms.  It is nice.  But, it does not have air conditioning.  The only other time I recall staying at a hotel without air conditioning was at an old hotel on Washington Island in northern Wisconsin, many years ago.  We do have an electric fan, but I don't think we are going to need it.

On another motorcycle ride a few years back Doug and I stayed in a motel in Key West.  They did not have heat in the rooms.  So, I guess you go with what the climate is.

Another good day.
